Central Otago District Council has advised that rabbit control operations are being carried out at several public sites across the district.

Operations have included the use of Pindone-laced carrot bait at the Cromwell and Clyde cemeteries and Half Mile Recreation Reserve in Alexandra. The Council also announced rabbit control at Sugarloaf Scenic Reserve near Cromwell, subject to suitable weather conditions.

People visiting affected areas should follow all warning signs and take precautions around bait and rabbit carcasses, particularly when supervising children or walking dogs.

The Council advises people to:

• Avoid handling bait or rabbit carcasses
• Keep children supervised
• Prevent dogs from accessing carcasses
• Avoid taking animals for food from the affected area or within 2 km of it
